Woollen clothing remains remarkably popular, despite the fact that wool has been in use for centuries. The Romans realised that wool provided a wonderful natural resource from which to make clothing.
In modern society, clothing is very important to all of us. The importance of clothing was recognised at an early stage in the development of human life. By the time that the Roman Empire was at its peak, clothes were seen as a means of keeping warm, as a way of identifying one’s rank in society and, of course, as a way of making a fashion statement.
Today, it’s clear to see that many of these themes still occur. In the case of woollen clothes, such as jumpers, many of us may choose to buy them because we know that they will keep us warm.
It’s no surprise that wool has the necessary properties to provide warmth. This is, after all, its primary role when found naturally on sheep and goats. We also use clothing as a means of expressing our role within society. This is particularly clear in the workplace, where clothing might point to rank or to the role that we play within an organisation.
